<p dir="auto">Steam sterilization, using moist heat in the form of saturated steam under pressure, is considered the most widely used and dependable method of sterilization. It offers several advantages: it is non-toxic, cost-effective, rapidly microbicidal, and sporicidal. Moreover, it can quickly heat and penetrate fabrics, making it suitable for a wide range of materials.</p>
<p dir="auto">However, it's important to note that steam sterilization may have some negative effects on certain materials. For example, it can cause corrosion and combustion of lubricants in dental handpieces. The ability of laryngoscopes to transmit light can also be reduced due to steam sterilization. Additionally, plaster casts may experience an increased hardening time of 5.6 fold when subjected to steam sterilization.</p>
<p dir="auto">Despite these potential drawbacks, steam sterilization remains a highly effective method for achieving sterilization in a variety of applications.</p>

<h2>Microbicidal Activity：</h2>
<p>Microorganisms can be inactivated through the application of heat, which is the oldest and most recognized agent for this purpose. The heat resistance of microorganisms is compared using D-values, which represent the time required to reduce the surviving population by 90% or 1 log10. D-values can be determined at different temperatures, indicated by a subscript (e.g., D121C represents the D-value at 121 degrees Celsius). For Geobacillus stearothermophilus, which is often used to monitor steam sterilization processes, the D121C values range from 1 to 2 minutes. However, heat-resistant non-spore-forming bacteria, yeasts, and fungi have such low D121C values that they cannot be measured experimentally.</p>
<h2>Mode of Action：</h2>
<p>Moist heat acts by irreversibly coagulating and denaturing enzymes and structural proteins, leading to the destruction of microorganisms. The presence of moisture significantly affects the coagulation temperature of proteins and the temperature at which microorganisms are eliminated.</p>
<h2>Use：</h2>
<p>Steam sterilization is recommended for critical and semicritical items that are resistant to heat and moisture. This includes respiratory therapy and anesthesia equipment that can be sterilized using steam. Additionally, steam sterilizers are used in healthcare facilities to decontaminate microbiological waste and sharps containers. However, these items require additional exposure time in a gravity displacement sterilizer.</p>
